4. Non-web-enabled vs. Web-enabled

The simplest type of xTuple server installation is non-web-enabled. In this configuration, you install only PostgreSQL and you connect to the server with the xTuple desktop client or other tools that connect to the database directly. Non-web-enabled servers can be installed on Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.

There is also the option to install a web-enabled server. A web-enabled server includes the PostgreSQL database, but also a REST API that outside applications can use to connect to the database. A web-enabled installation includes a Node.js server and nginx. A web-enabled xTuple server can only be installed on the Linux platform.
