1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

We discussed the importance of SEO and keywords in Section 2.2, “Marketing” when we explored the Marketing tab on the ERP's Item master screen. But paying attention to keywords as a way of improving your SEO is something you should be thinking about in relation to all the content you publish on your web portal.

Keywords (along with metadata) are the primary cues a search engine uses to determine if your portal is offering information relevant to a search query. It is important to know how people search for your type of service or product and then write your portal copy and assign keywords and metadata to reflect that.

Additionally, the names you give to your pages, articles and news posts have a great impact on the weight a search engine will assign to your portal. Be sure to name your pages with keywords toward the beginning of the title. For example, why use a generic page name like www.example.com/deals when a more descriptive page name like the following could be used: www.example.com/broadband-packages. The second example is not only accurate, it provides detailed keywords that will make it easier for search engines to find your content. And the more people who find your content, the more customers you are bound to have. Making smart SEO decisions about every aspect of your content management will augment the already SEO-compatible performance of the xTupleCommerce portal.

As important as keywords are, the advent of new search engine algorithms has rendered traditional SEO methods (e.g., content writing, keywords and page titles) no longer sufficient to obtain consistently good results. To be successful, today's business owner must have the following:

  • Regularly refreshed content such as a news feed or industry-related article.

  • Content marketing strategy

  • Specially targeting landing pages for search engine ad campaigns (search engine marketing)

  • Email marketing (CRM)

  • Daily deals or other outreach advertising

  • A social media marketing (SMM) plan

All of these practices mentioned above fall under one broader term―and that is search marketing integration (SMI).
