3. Item Setup

Create Units of Measure

Units of measure (UOM) represent the standard amount in which quantities of an item are managed (e.g., EACH, POUNDS, GALLONS, etc.).

  • Enter UOM name and description.

  • Add global conversion ratios.

Create Class Codes

Specifically used for inventory control, class codes provide a mechanism for categorizing items regardless of item type. Class codes are primarily used for the purposes of reporting.

  • Enter new class codes and descriptions.

Create Product Categories

Items that are sold are assigned a product category. Product categories are used throughout the application for the purposes of inventory and sales reporting. Because product categories are used in sales account assignments, you should consider how you want to report product revenue when creating product categories.

  • Enter product category and description.

Create Freight Classes

Freight classes refer to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) standard, as defined by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association. Freight classes are used in the freight pricing matrix.

  • Enter freight class and description.

Review Characteristics

Prior to entering or importing item records in the system, take a moment to review item characteristics and ensure all the appropriate item attributes are identified.

  • Select NEW or EDIT to create or modify existing characteristics.

Enter Items

Enter items or parts utilized to build and/or distribute you products.

  • Enter item number and description.

  • Select item type, class code, unit of measure.

  • If sold, select product category and enter list price.

  • Select characteristics.

  • Complete tax types.

  • Optional: Enter item sources now—or wait until after vendors have been set up.

  • Create item sites.

Review Item Sites

Item sites define how inventory is controlled—both during transactional activity and also when the planning systems (e.g., MRP, MPS) are run.

  • Item records must exist before item sites can be entered or imported.

  • Select whether item site can manufacture, purchase, or sell an item.

  • Identify control method.

  • Specify cost category and planner code.

  • Choose cost method.

  • Indicate whether multiple location control is used.

  • Enter planning data.
