14.2. Obtaining Your Google Maps API Key

There are a number of steps for you to take in order to obtain your Google Maps API key. Once you obtain the key, you simply add it to your web portal and it is saved. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. If your organization uses Google Apps for email, go to a Google page and log into your account.

  2. Once you are logged in, go to the following page: https://cloud.google.com/maps-platform/

  3. Click on the GET STARTED button.

  4. When a pop-up window appears, check the Maps option and click CONTINUE.

  5. Add a project name and click NEXT.

  6. On the Enable Billing for project window click Create Billing Account.

  7. Follow the instructions and add a credit card to the account.

  8. Click SUBMIT AND ENABLE BILLING at the bottom of the page.

  9. A new window will appear to enable your Google Maps API.

  10. Click Next.

  11. After a few seconds a new window will appear. This window is very important. It contains your API Key. Copy that entire key and save it to a safe and secure place. Once you've saved the key, you can click Done to close the window.

  12. In the left sidebar, click the APIs menu item

  13. By default 6 APIs are enabled. You need to add the Google Maps Geocoding API.

  14. Click on Geocoding API. You are redirected to a new page.

  15. Click Enable.

  16. Your redirected to Geocoding API’s Analytics page.

  17. Now log into your xTupleCommerce web portal and navigate to Admin > Control Panel > Google.

  18. Paste your API key into that field and click SAVE. The system may take up to five minutes to update.

Note

There are other tools within the Google Console that are helpful. For instance, you can restrict which URLs can use your API key. You may wish to research the Google Console tools and see if they would be appropriate for your company needs.
